It is much more convenient to catch bream from a boat than from the shore. Quite often, side fishing rods are used in this case, which allow you to fish both in the current and in still water. Fishing on them allows you to realize all the advantages of a boat for an angler, as well as use an inexpensive winter echo sounder.

Benefits of side rods

Side rods are usually short length rods that are used for fishing from a boat in a plumb or almost plumb line. The material from which they are made does not matter much, since the fishing rod does not participate in the casting, and the hauling is often done simply by the line, as in winter fishing.

One of the main advantages is that it is very inexpensive and can be made independently. This is what most anglers usually do. Side rods are made from top whips for float rods, from old spinning rods, including broken ones, from feeder rods. Fishing shops also have a lot to offer: there are many inexpensive rods on sale that can be used as sideboards. Yes, and winter fishing rods can often be used in this capacity with some restrictions.

The second advantage is the ability to use a large number of them, which usually increases the chances of a bite. From each side of the boat, the angler can install three or four rods – depending on the size of the boat. If you stand in a baited place, it absolutely does not let you get bored, and the angler will only do what to pull bream from the water one after another.

Due to their large number and their small size, it becomes possible to fish them from a boat together. One puts several fishing rods from his side, the second – from his own. And two anglers will not interfere with each other in any way, which would happen when fishing with long rods, which from time to time have to make wide swings when casting and coordinate them with a partner. This is a great opportunity to fish with a friend, to introduce a son or even a wife to fishing.

And this is really possible, because fishing with such gear does not require special skills, qualifications of an angler. There are no complicated reels here, there is no need to perform high-quality and accurate casting. Tackle, although it can get confused, but this happens quite rarely. And if it gets tangled, there is always the opportunity to get a new one, and put it in a backpack. After all, the cost of the fishing rod is small, the size too, and this allows you to carry a large number of them with you.

Disadvantages of a side rod

Despite the advantages, such fishing rods can have disadvantages when fishing for bream. The very first drawback is that you can only fish from a boat. Of course, this method can be used when fishing from piers, embankments, barges. But at the same time, the angler will be very tightly tied to a specific fishing spot, where there may not be fish. And with conventional methods of fishing from the shore, there is more choice.

The second disadvantage is that fishing is carried out at a fairly large depth. At depths of less than one and a half to two meters, the bream, as a rule, will not stand under the boat – it is afraid of both its shadow and the noise that the fisherman in it always makes. In some bodies of water, for example, in small rivers, there will not be many places where the depth is more than two meters. Yes, and bream often goes out to feed on the shallows, ignoring the deep areas.

The third disadvantage is the difficulty in catching the wave. The boat in this case will rock, even on a weak wave. At the same time, it can be quite difficult to track the bite due to the fact that it is difficult to ensure a constant tension of the fishing line from the signaling device to the hook. This disadvantage is partially compensated by the use of special designs and bite signaling devices.

Interesting designs of side rods and bite alarms

There are several designs that have proven themselves well when fishing for bream.

mini feeder

A rod produced by some companies that allows you to fish with a feeder in winter. Due to a rather long tip and soft action, it allows you to well compensate for the vibrations of the boat on the wave without tearing off the sinker. You can simply buy this fishing rod in the store and immediately use it as a side rod. It is not necessary to fish with a feeder, but you need to put a heavy load on it so that it does not come off when the boat oscillates from the bottom. Using an inline rig with a very long lead or a paternoster with a very long, about half a meter, loop for a feeder weight allows you to fish with a mini-feeder on a larger wave than with the usual blind fastening of the load to the line.

Board fishing rod with a nod Shcherbakov

This nodding system was described by the Shcherbakov brothers in a video dedicated to winter fishing. The author of the article caught on such a nod with a side fishing rod, while he showed himself perfectly. A nod of this type makes it easy to rebuild the rod for any load, but for fishing it must have a much longer working part – at least half a meter. On a wave, such a nod makes rhythmic oscillations and compensates for the tension of the fishing line.

A bite can be seen as a failure in the rhythmic fluctuations of the nod, including on the rise, which is very important when catching bream – it almost always takes on the rise. You can use a fairly weak weight when fishing, comparable to the weight of a float rod, and catch a cautious bream. The nod is extremely sensitive and shows the most subtle touch to the bait, it can also be used when catching small fish. The nod is not sold in the store and you will have to make it yourself.

Broken-tip fishing rod

The design of the fishing rod of the Alexey Statsenko system was described in detail on the Salapin.ru video channel. Its design is a board fishing rod, in which the tip, which acts as a nod, has a length of about 30-40 cm and is connected to the main part with a flexible spring. At the same time, the nod compensates for the oscillations of the boat on the wave, making rhythmic movements. The bite is visible both on the rise and on the pull. In addition, Alexey describes the original mounting with magnets, which is very convenient. The rod is made according to the filly system of a fairly large size, which gives many advantages, and can be made by the angler on his own.

Sliding float rod

Such a fishing rod perfectly compensates for the vibrations of the boat even on a strong wave. The signaling device here is a sliding float, which is located on the surface of the water. The section of the fishing line from the rod to it usually just sags, and with a wave height of even up to 50 cm, you can safely catch. A sliding float for such a fishing rod is usually taken long enough to be seen among the waves – its antenna has a length of up to half a meter.

At the same time, it can both keep the nozzle in a suspended state, as in ordinary fishing with a float, and serve as a signaling device for bottom gear with a sliding sinker lying motionless on the bottom. It can also be used when fishing for bream on a jig, which can be given oscillations that are independent of the waves, or by allowing it to freely oscillate on the waves. So you can catch other types of fish, using both winter spinners and a balancer. The disadvantage of this rod is that it is inconvenient to play the fish due to the fact that the float often does not have time to roll down the line and gets stuck in the tulip of the rod, because of which you have to pull the tackle by the line.

Lateral nod with a bell

A simple and effective bite signaling device, which can be made from a rather rigid side nod by attaching bells to it near the base. The nod will make rhythmic oscillations on the wave, while the bell will not ring, since everything will happen smoothly, without jerks. When biting, there is usually a sharper movement that will immediately cause a ringing. The disadvantage of this fishing rod is that the bell is usually firmly attached to the nod so that its weight does not affect its operation. Therefore, playing with a rod and reel will be accompanied by a terrible ringing, and it is better to drag by the line.

Winter fishing rods that can be used as flatbed

Immediately it is worth discarding short fishing rods for fishing with mormyshka. They are not very convenient as a side rod, they do not allow you to dampen vibrations due to the flexibility of the rod blank. Their length often leads to the fact that the fishing line will cling to the side of the boat, and the bite will not be visible very well.

More suitable rods with a reel, used when fishing with a lure and a balancer. Usually they have sufficient length, and fishing with them is much more comfortable. In addition, a tulip is placed on them at a distance from the tip, which allows you to fix the nod, remove it and adjust it, and there is often an additional reel, which is used when moving, simply by winding the fishing line on it, and not on the reel.

Vireg tal-wajer

An interesting design of a bottom rod for bream fishing, where the vibrations of the boat on the wave are compensated by the body of the rod, which is made from a simple piece of wire. A rod with a reel for fishing line is bent from wire. The rigidity of the rod should be small so that the wire bends on the wave and the load does not come off. Bells or a bell attached to a wire are used as a bite signaling device, and the wire itself must be firmly fixed on the side of the boat and stand upright. The fishing rod is very simple and can be made by hand.

Attaching rods to a boat

One of the ways has already been described – fastening fishing rods with magnets. The method, although it seems unreliable, is perfect for fishing. A pair of magnets is used, and in order to tear them off, a force of at least three kilograms is required. Fish often cannot even develop this, even large ones. In addition, the fishing rod described by Alexei Statsenko has a floating structure, and even if it is accidentally lost, it can then be caught and pulled back into the boat. One magnet is on the fishing rod, the second is glued to the boat.

Mounting is simple and does not require any additional devices, but works better on a wooden boat. In addition, you must carefully remove the fishing rod when biting so that the rest do not fall into the water.

The third way is to use special fasteners. They can be purchased or homemade, have a different design (you can’t list everyone!). The disadvantage of such a mount is that it is usually quite large and takes up space in the boat. However, this is the most reliable way to secure a sideline rod, and if it is heavy and can sink, it is the most acceptable for the angler.

Metodi tas-sajd

There are several ways to fish with side rods:

  • Bottom fishing (including feeder). A weight is used that lies motionless on the bottom and holds the equipment. It is used most often when fishing for bream. Can use a feeder connected to the rod, but more often the food is simply thrown down by hand. Can fishing is a type of side bottom fishing.
  • Fishing with a suspended sinker. Reminiscent of float fishing, but when side fishing for bream, the distance from the main sinker to the shed and hook should be greater than when fishing with a float. This is done so that when fluctuating on a wave, the hook continues to lie on the bottom, without coming off and not scaring away the fish.
  • Mormyshka fishing. The angler in the boat has less opportunity to wobble the jig than the angler on the ice due to the roughness of the boat. Therefore, fairly simple mormyshkas and a fairly simple wide game are used, which is expressed in periodically pulling the mormyshka up and free falling. Such fishing is usually practiced in late autumn and allows you to attract bream when the bait is no longer so effective.
  • Ring fishing. The method of fishing is well suited for catching bream in the current. A feeder is used, which is lowered into the water on a separate cord and a load that freely walks along this cord. The load can be attached to the fishing line or also walk freely on it. At the end of the fishing line there is one or more leashes with hooks, pulled by the current.
