Scaly whip (Pluteus ephebeus) is a mushroom of the Plyuteev family, belongs to the genus Plyuteev.

The fruiting body consists of a cap and a stem.

The cap diameter is 4-9 cm, it has thick flesh. The shape varies from semicircular to convex. In mature mushrooms, it becomes prostrate, has a clearly visible tubercle in the center. The surface is gray-brown in color, with fibers. In the central part of the cap, small scales pressed to the surface are clearly visible. Ripe specimens often develop radial cracks on the cap.

Leg length: 4-10 cm, and width – 0.4-1 cm. It is located in the center, has a cylindrical shape and a dense structure, tuberous near the base. Has a grayish or white surface, smooth and shiny. On the stem, the grooves left by the fibers are visible, and there are more of them in the lower part.

The pulp of the scaly spice is viscous in taste, white in color. Has no pronounced odor. Does not change its color in places of damage to the fruiting body.

The hymenophore is lamellar. Plates of large width, located freely and often. In color – gray-pink, in mature mushrooms they acquire a pink color and a white edge.

The color of the spore powder is pink. There are no remains of an earthen cover on the fruiting body.

The spores are elliptical or broad elliptical in shape. May be ovoid, most often smooth.

The hyphae of the skin covering the fruiting body have a brown pigment. Pigmented large cells are clearly visible on the stem, since the hyphae of the skin here are colorless. Four-spore club-shaped basidia with thin walls.

Saprotroph. Prefers to develop on the dead remains of deciduous trees or directly on the soil. You can meet scaly whips (Pluteus ephebeus) in mixed forests and beyond (for example, in parks and gardens). The fungus is common but rare. Known in Our Country, the British Isles and Europe. It is found in the Primorye and China. The scaly whip also grows in Morocco (North Africa).

Fruiting from August to October.

Ma jittiekelx.

Pluteus robertii. Some experts distinguish the scaly-like (Pluteus lepiotoides) as a separate species (at the same time, many mycologists call this fungus a synonym). It has fruiting bodies – smaller, scales are clearly visible on the surface, the pulp does not have an astringent taste. The spores, cystids and basidia of these fungal species differ in their size.
